S!NOSPHERE
S!NOSPHERE 시리즈는 한글 안의 한자어에 침을 꼽는 작업이다. 여기서 한글 일색이 된 한국어 문장은 ‘하나됨을 강조하는 한국 사회의 공기 및 기질’을 반영하고, 한자는 그로 인해 억압되거나 희미해진 ‘개인의 목소리, 다양성’을 상징한다. 세월호, 촛불집회, No Japan 운동 등에서 보이는 양면성을 담아내고 그 안에서 발견되는 인습적 한국성을 비판하고자 한다. 시리즈는 횟수를 거듭하며, 주제에 따라 발현되는 형식이 달라졌다. <채집된 기억>에서는 사건 기사를 채집한다는 의미로 곤충 채집용 핀을 활용하였고, <Observance>에서는 한자적 가치의 장례식을 표현하기 위해 침 대신 향을 놓았다.
S!NOSPHERE series is an artwork acupuncturing on Chinese characters within the Korean letters. The Korean letters themselves represent ‘The atmosphere and characteristics of Korean culture that emphasise the unification’ and the Chinese characters symbolise ‘Individual voice and variety’ being suppressed by the former. S!NOSPHERE series is aimed at revealing a double-faced aspect of Se-Wol-Ho, Candlelight vigil, Boycott Japan and criticising its conventional ethnicity that can be found in it. Over time, the series has been visualised in different ways based on its theme. Entomology forceps were used in <Collected Memory> as a meaning of collecting affairs, and incense was used instead of acupuncture in <Observance> in order to represent a funeral of the value of Chinese characters.

"우리는 우리의 기억을 고전으로 만들지 못 한 채, 거대한 사회적 압력에 의해 소비하고 금세 잊어버린다. '채집된 기억'은 S!NOSPHERE의 룰을 빌려, 현대 한국 사회에 등장한 크고 작은 사건들을 채집해 놓았다. 나는 '채집된 기억'을 통해 형식적인 모습에 갇혀 소비될지도 모를 소중한 기억을 고전으로 만드는 작업을 한다."
私たちは[我々の記憶]を古典に作られないまま、巨大な社会的圧力によって消費され、すぐに忘れる。[採集された記憶]はS!NOSPHEREのルールを借り、現代韓国社会に登場した大きく小さい事件たちを採集しておいた。私は[採集された記憶]を通して形式的な姿にとらわれ、消費されるかも知れない大切な記憶を古典に昇華させる仕事をする。

한글의 탄생을 나타내는 '훈민정음 서문'의 한자어에 침을 대신해 향을 피웠다. 한자적 감각에 대한 장례식을 구현한 이번 작품에서 한글은 사회의 획일화된 측면을, 한자는 개인의 목소리 또는 다양성을 상징한다.

어떤 역사학자에 따르면, 한국의 뛰어난 점은 중국이라는 거대한 블랙홀을 옆에 두고도 그 장력에 빨려 들어가지 않고 여전히 남아있다는 것이라고 한다. 이번 작품에서 '한글'은 거대한 것에 대항하 기 위한 한국의 강한 정체성을 상징한다. 그것은 서로를 응집시켜 한국으로서 살아남는 것을 가능하게 하였으나 그와 같은 습관은 여전히 응집된 사회 속에서 소소한 다양성 (혹은 개인, 작품 내에서 한자로 상징) 을 희미하게 만들고 있을지도 모른다. 한자문화를 뚫고 한글이 태어난 그날에 우리는 무엇을 기념해야할 것인가.
According to some historians, Korea’s greatness lies in surviving its adjoining neighbor: having had to overcome the threatening gravity of the gigantic black hole that is China. In Observance, ‘Hangul’ symbolizes the fighting identity of Korea, a biting resistance against that massive force. It has worked tirelessly to bind one Korean to another, so empowering Korea to remain Korea. At the same time, however, this habit of bondage with its stubborn strength just might be doing something else on the other side: it could be very well suffocating diversity within the Korean society (or individuality, represented as Chinese characters in the series). On this day commemorating the emergence of Hangul, which has pierced the dominance of the Chinese written-word culture, what are we to celebrate, actually?
